The event aimed to help the public better understand thyroid cancer and benign thyroid nodules, contributing to reducing unnecessary treatments for thyroid conditions.

During the programme, citizens and patients had the opportunity to hear experts from various fields related to thyroid diseases present on topics such as “The Current Situation of Thyroid Cancer and Principles for Managing Thyroid Nodules and Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma”; “Prevention and Screening of Thyroid Cancer and Management of Benign Thyroid Nodules”; “Radioactive Iodine Treatment for Papillary Thyroid Cancer”; “Surgical Treatment for Thyroid Cancer”; “Thyroid Ultrasound”; and “Cytology and Histopathology in Thyroid Cancer.”

The event provided an opportunity for the public and patients to access expert information, discuss their concerns, and engage with healthcare professionals. It also served as a platform for experts and doctors to exchange and update medical literature, ensuring consensus on thyroid nodule management methods while incorporating patient and family input.

Through this seminar, the CDC and Pasteur General Clinic aimed to contribute to public health protection and raise awareness about thyroid diseases.

Dr. Nguyen Dai Vinh, Director of the city’s CDC, emphasised that non-communicable disease prevention, including cancer, has been a key focus for the CDC.

Thyroid cancer, in particular, is easily detectable through screening. Along with raising public awareness about risk factors, promoting healthy living, and implementing vaccination programmes, the CDC has developed plans to screen for thyroid conditions in high-risk groups and manage patients effectively.

Globally, thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy, with approximately 586,202 new cases and 43,646 deaths reported in 2020. In Viet Nam, thyroid cancer ranks 6th in new cases and 21st in mortality among all cancers.

However, thyroid cancer has a low mortality rate and a favourable prognosis, with a 5-year survival rate of approximately 98% for differentiated thyroid cancer. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the distinctions between benign and malignant thyroid nodules to make appropriate management decisions.
