In order to ensure blood reserves for emergency and treatment at hospitals before, during and after Tet 2025, units, localities and universities across Da Nang have actively mobilised volunteers, students and local people to participate in voluntary blood donation campaigns.

Strive to reach 3,200 units of blood

In response to the blood donation plan for Tet 2025, since the beginning of January, the city's Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation has coordinated with units, localities and universities citywide to continuously organise concentrated blood donation campaigns.

On the first Sunday morning of 2025, hundreds of students from the University of Science and Technology - the University of Da Nang gathered at the school for a blood donation campaign.

Waiting for his turn to donate blood, Tran Quang Hai, the third year student major in Information Technology, said that this was the third time he had donated blood.

"Understanding the meaning of voluntary blood donation, I registered to donate blood every time when the school launched the campaign, thereby contributing to saving patients" Hai said.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi Thao My, the 3rd year student majoring in Biotechnology, stated that she had a relative who was hospitalised in the emergency room, so she understood the value of donated blood and the meaning of voluntary blood donation. "Donating blood to save people is a volunteer activity that anyone can do, contributing to improving their own health and sharing blood with patients in need" My confided.

Similarly, the Duy Tan University has recently organised a voluntary blood donation campaign, attracting more than 500 staff, lecturers, and students.

Student Le Hai Ky from the Duy Tan University said “With the message ‘Giving drops of red blood - Sowing seeds of life’, I usually register to donate blood in every campaign launched by my university. I hope that my blood will contribute to saving patients in critical situations”.

According to the Chief of Office of the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation of Da Nang Doan Van Hoa, the estimated amount of blood reserved to serve emergency needs before, during and after Tet At Ty is about 3,200 units of blood. To ensure this amount of blood, in the first 15 days of January 2025, 8 concentrated blood donation campaigns were organized across the city, collecting 2,075 units of blood. In the remaining days before the Tet Festival, two more concentrated blood donation campaigns will be held at the Da Nang Hospital and Thanh Khe District People's Committee, expected to receive about 1,100 more units of blood, basically ensuring the amount of blood reserved at hospitals.

In particular, starting from January 20, the city’s Office of the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation has activated all reserve blood donation teams, ready to donate blood when requested by hospitals, meeting emergency and treatment needs during the Tet holiday.

Multiplying good values

According to Dr. Doan Thi Cam Nhung, Deputy Head of the Department of Hematology - Blood Transfusion under the Da Nang Hospital, before, during and after Tet, the demand for blood for emergency care increases. However, blood donation mobilisation is facing many difficulties because most students, civil servants, public employees and workers return to their hometowns for Tet celebration.

The Da Nang Hospital provides blood and blood products for not only its patients but also for those being treated at other hospitals in the city, so it is necessary to ensure blood reserves.

"The amount of blood stored in the warehouse before Tet holiday is from 1,500 - 2,000 units of blood to ensure emergency and treatment needs during Tet holiday. Therefore, to avoid blood shortages, it is necessary to have the community join hands in donating blood” said Dr. Nhung.

According to the Office of the city's Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, in recent years, the voluntary blood donation movement in the city has developed positively. Armed forces, civil servants, public employees, workers, students, religious organisations, and private enterprises have enthusiastically participated in blood donation.

The work of maintaining and developing blood donors has achieved positive results. Up to now, the whole city has 12 voluntary blood donation models and clubs operating effectively. Included are the ‘Loving Hands’, ‘Living to Love’ and ‘Understanding and Love’ clubs, Reserve Blood Donation Team of the Da Nang Youth Union, and the Living Blood Volunteer Team of the Da Nang Buddhist Family.

In 2024, the whole city organised 132 voluntary blood donation campaigns, receiving 42,085 units of blood, reaching 145% of the annual plan. Of which, the Da Nang Hospital received 30,681 units of blood, the Oncology Hospital 6,566 units of blood, the Da Nang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital 449 units of blood, and the Hue Central Hospital 4,389 units of blood.

Notably, the rate of repeated blood donations reached 58%, and the rate of blood donations of 350ml volume reached 62%. The proportion of voluntary blood donors accounted for 3.37% of the population.

In 2025, the need for blood in hospitals in the city is estimated to be 36,000 units of blood. Specifically, the Da Nang Hospital is in need of 30,000 units of blood, the Da Nang Oncology Hospital 5,500 units of blood, and the Da Nang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital 500 units of blood.
