Accordingly, the "Flowering Railways" initiative has been prioritized by the local community, actively encouraging residents in the area to plant flowers along the Truong Chinh frontage road within Hoa An Ward. Residents are also regularly engaged in cleaning up litter and maintaining environmental hygiene to uphold urban civility.
Residents are also encouraged to strictly comply with traffic safety laws, protect railway equipment, and prevent uncivil actions such as throwing stones at trains or placing obstacles on the tracks.
Ms. Mai Thi Thuy Huong, a member of Women's Union Chapter 1, shared: “After the women's union planted flowers along the railway, residents have become more conscious about preserving these flower beds. We have also undertaken other tasks such as picking up litter and properly disposing of household waste in the hope of creating a beautiful, safe residential area.”
The "Flowering Railways" model is tied to the "Self-Managed Women's Road, Flowering Street" and the "Environmentally Friendly Ward" initiative. It involves planting trees and flowers to beautify railway corridors, ensuring safety and creating clean and appealing surroundings in residential areas, guided by principles of practicality, suitability, effectiveness, safety, and cost-efficiency.
Ms. Nguyen Phuc Kim Phuong, Vice President of the Women's Union of Hoa An Ward, stated that to enhance awareness among officials, union members, and residents about environmental protection and urban civilization, the union has promoted the "Flowering Railways" movement across local chapters. This has fostered community cohesion and strengthened solidarity between residents and railway staff.
“Over time, many flower streets have been planted and well-maintained by union members and railway staff. The initiative has gained strong support from residents living along the railway. Moving forward, we will continue to sustain and expand this model to create green, clean, and beautiful environments in areas with railway lines,” added Ms. Kim Phuong.
Now, vibrant bougainvillea and yellow-flowering golden shower trees thrive in previously vacant lots. These resilient plants suit the local climate and soil along the railway corridors, crossings, and embankments. Neatly arranged flower pots have replaced the overgrown grass that once marred the urban landscape.
To ensure the sustainable growth of these plants and the longevity of the initiative, the Women's Union has established teams dedicated to the care and maintenance of flower beds.
Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc Han, a resident of Group 10 in Hoa An Ward, shared that residents along the railway have become increasingly involved in planting, watering, pruning, weeding, and caring for the flowers. They also frequently sweep and remove litter and plastic bags, improving the living environment, balancing the ecosystem, reducing pollution, and enhancing the area's beauty. This contributes to a clean and green residential area, ensures railway safety, and creates a friendly and memorable impression for passengers passing through.
According to Mr. Vo Van Tung, Chairman of the Trade Union of Quang Nam - Da Nang Railway Joint Stock Company, the "Flowering Railways" movement was launched by the railway sector in 2023. Since its inception, it has garnered widespread attention and support from officials, union members, workers in the railway industry, local residents, and authorities in areas with railway routes.
