Green solutions, green actions
In the early morning, Mr. Nguyen Hanh, from group 3, Phu Hoa 1 village, Hoa Nhon commune, brews a pot of hot tea, sits on his porch, looks out at the 5-meter-wide concrete road, and smiles gently. This road used to be less than 3 meters wide, rough with rocks and gravel, and overgrown with bushes. Nearly a year ago, when the district decided to widen the inter-village road to group 3 to 5 meters, the local government came to the area to mobilize people to donate land and contribute labor.
During that meeting, Mr. Hanh stood up and volunteered to donate 70m2 of land in front of his house, dismantle the fence, and contribute an additional 42 million VND to pour concrete on a 30m stretch of road. "At first, I was hesitant because the garden land is a source of livelihood, but thinking about the spacious and clean road for my children and grandchildren, my family unanimously agreed to contribute. Now that the roads are wide and green trees run along both sides, it feels like living in the city while still being in the countryside," Mr. Hanh said excitedly, his eyes sparkling with joy.
The story of Mr. Hanh's family donating land to build roads is not uncommon in Hoa Vang, where people are always united with development policies. Throughout the communes from Hoa Nhon and Hoa Bac to Hoa Phong and Hoa Khuong, many households are willing to donate land and dismantle construction to serve transportation projects, schools, football fields, or new residential areas. This spirit stems from trust in the government, as well as the belief that each contribution today is part of the urban landscape of the future.
The secretary of Hoa Vang District Party Committee To Van Hung recognizes that building an eco-urban area is the right choice, ensuring sustainable development for Hoa Vang. This aspiration is expressed in Resolution No. 07-NQ/TU dated July 7, 2021, on the construction and development of Hoa Vang district until 2030, with a vision to 2045, which clearly defines the development of this area towards an eco-urban model with a unique identity, linked to new rural development and improving the quality of life for residents.
In recent times, the development orientation of Hoa Vang has not been separated from the conservation of natural landscapes. Rivers, forests, agricultural land, and perennial crop land are protected by the government to maintain biodiversity. Not to mention a number of traditional craft villages, communal houses, and festivals are gradually being restored to preserve the unique identity of Hoa Vang. For example, the ancient village of Tuy Loan, famous for its cultural beauty and unique cuisine, has become a highlight in the eco-tourism development strategy. Inter-village roads have been expanded, and lighting systems have been installed synchronously and consistently.
In particular, the develofarm staypment of homestay and farmstay models creates opportunities for visitors to experience rural life through activities such as making rice paper, growing vegetables, and fishing on the river. The combination of ecological tourism and green agriculture with cultural preservation enhances economic value and fosters a sense of pride among local residents. Mr. Tran Van Minh, a local resident in Tuy Loan village, stated that since the village was included in the tourism development program, the infrastructure and the economic and cultural life of people have significantly improved. However, he believes that the most valuable aspect is witnessing his grandchildren grow up with love and appreciation for the traditional values left by their ancestors.
In mountainous communes like Hoa Phu and Hoa Bac, many households are actively involved in protecting forest land and restoring natural ecosystems. Mr. Thieu Song, a dedicated elderly farmer from Dong Lam village, has spent decades caring for his family’s acacia forest. When the district initiated a campaign to protect water sources and combat erosion, he did not hesitate to plant hundreds of large trees in the steep areas of his fields. "As long as the forest exists, the village will thrive. It is not just a source of livelihood but also a shield that protects us from natural disasters," Mr. Song remarked.
Hoa Vang develops, then Da Nang develops
With the initiative to build an ecologically rich urban area, Hoa Vang district has been focusing on urban planning that emphasizes connectivity, harmony, biodiversity, and respect for cultural and historical values. The priority is on developing modern residential areas that blend seamlessly with green spaces and sustainable architecture. The local government is also investing in ecological parks along the river, community tourism linked to traditional crafts, and nature reserves.
“An eco-city is a city characterized by green, cohesive landscape architecture that is interconnected to form a complete system. It is based on principles that preserve biodiversity, harmonize with nature, integrate green landscapes, green transportation, and green corridors, while aligning with environmental ecological thresholds. More importantly, it prioritizes the development of a green economy and a circular economy to meet the needs of its residents,” passionately stated Mr. To Van Hung.
In the current administrative structure, Hoa Vang district holds a strategically important position in the socio-economic development, security, and defense of Da Nang city. Mr. Vo Cong Tri, Chairman of the Da Nang Union of Science and Technology Associations, noted that Hoa Vang accounts for more than 75% of the city's land area and 93.6% of its agricultural production land. This creates favorable conditions for the district to develop rapidly and sustainably, while also reserving land resources for urbanization and industrialization throughout the area. The development process will face many difficulties, but Mr. Tri believes that if Hoa Vang develops according to the outlined plans, Da Nang city will also develop.
It can be said that Da Nang's orientation of building an ecological urban area rich in identity that Da Nang has for Hoa Vang will be a strong push, while also placing significant challenges on the local Party Committee, government, and people regarding the necessity of balancing development and preservation.
In that long-term journey, Hoa Vang is expected by the city to become a strategic satellite urban area, with unique mechanisms and policies linked to piloting breakthrough and innovative issues with no precedent. That aspiration is not only the wish of Hoa Vang alone but also contributes to affirming a sustainable direction for the entire city of Da Nang. And certainly, a prosperous, green, and vibrant Hoa Vang will become a source of pride and a foundation for the development of Da Nang in its journey of integration and reaching international stature.
