At around 5:30 pm every day, a free class at the Hai Son community house in Thanh Binh Ward, Hai Chau District, welcomes nearly 15 local pupils . Organised by the Women's Union organisation in Thanh Binh Ward for about a year, the class aims to help disadvantaged pupils reduce the pressure on their study journey.
Mrs. Vo Thi Thanh Thuy, Chairwoman of the Women's Union in the ward, said that the class was established with the support of local authorities, volunteer teachers and contributions from members. Every week, the class organises two English sessions, a Math session, a Literature session and a Natural Science session for primary and junior high school pupils in the district.
In particularly, Literature and Math lessons are held on Saturday and Sunday evenings, while the other days of the week are flexible according to the schedules of teachers and pupils. Teachers working in the education and training sector or students majoring in pedagogy participate in the teaching at the class.
In addition to free teaching for the children, the Women's Union of the ward and volunteer teachers have actively mobilised generous donors to support desks, chairs, books, and school supplies for pupils.
Such class also offers free-of-charge free cakes, candies, and water. Since the class was established, poor families with school-age children have somewhat reduced the difficulties and economic burden of their children's extra study.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy residing in Thanh Binh Ward whose child is attending the class, confided “My husband and I work part-time with unstable incomes, so we cannot afford to send our child to a centre or hire a tutor. Thanks to this free class, the family feels much more secure about our child's education. Since attending the class, my child's academic performance and learning awareness have improved significantly. We thank the ward-level Women's Union and the teachers for their dedicated guidance and support. Hopefully, this class will be maintained and more children from disadvantaged families will have the opportunity to attend class and become useful members of society in the coming time”.
Similarly, there is a free class for poor pupils in Thac Gian Ward in Thanh Khe District. Launched by the Women's Union of Trung Binh A3 Residential Area in 2023, the class only offers English and drawing sessions to pupils due to the limited number of volunteer teachers
Thanks to the connection of women's union officials and members, there are now teachers to teach Math and Literature to pupils.
Mrs. Hoang Thi Thuy, Head of the Women's Union of Trung Binh A3 residential area, said that the zero-dong class currently has 2 English classes for primary and junior high school pupils, and a Math and Vietnamese class for primary pupils. Each class has 12-15 pupils.
Despite free class, pupils are taught according to international standard curriculum. In particular, the teaching method combining mind maps helps pupils improve their ability to analyse problems and present in front of a crowd.
In addition to the two abovementioned free classes, there are many other classes opened by women's unions or individual members to help poor pupils reach the door of knowledge.
According to Head of the Propaganda and Legal Policy Department of the municipal Women's Union Nguyen Thi Ha Thu, the free classes for poor pupils are a meaningful, humane, and effective model. Children are not only provided with free knowledge, but are also equipped with life skills through many useful extracurricular activities.
In particular, on major holidays and Tet Festival, especially International Children's Day June 1 and Mid-Autumn Festival, children are given many gifts and cakes by benefactors. These classes contribute to effectively exploiting the functions of community activity houses, and promoting the work of encouraging learning and encouraging talents in the city.
