Previously, patient H.T.N, 52, a resident from Quang Ngai Province, had severe bone pain and could not walk, so he came to the Da Nang Hospital for examination.
Through medical checkups, the patient was diagnosed with multiple myeloma at the third stage, so he would undergo chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation. The patient underwent bone surgery combined with four courses of chemotherapy at the hospital, each course lasting 3 weeks, before the transplantation.
After treatment, the patient was transferred to the transplant area at the Organ Transplant and Stem Cell Transplant Centre (absolutely sterile isolation area). Doctors from the Department of Neurology - Musculoskeletal - Clinical Hematology performed an autologous stem cell transplant for the patient.
Doctors separated the patient’s stem cells and injected them back into his body via a vein. After nearly 20 days of stem cell infusion, the patient was stable, walking normally and was discharged from the hospital.
Doctor Tran Thi Thanh Huong from the Department of Neurology - Musculoskeletal - Clinical Hematology - who directly performed the autologous stem cell transplant for the patient N said that the difficulty of the transplant was to calculate how to separate enough stem cells to successfully perform the transplant. And most importantly, it was necessary to ensure an absolutely sterile environment for the patient. Therefore, the departments worked closely to ensure clean air, RO water, and strictly controlled food.
According to Dr. Huong, autologous stem cell transplantation is a new advanced treatment method applied in Da Nang, helping to quickly restore the patient's hematopoietic system after high-dose chemotherapy in order to prevent life-threatening complications. This technique brings a chance to live and significantly improves the quality of life for patients with malignant hematological diseases such as lymphoma, myeloproliferative syndrome, multiple myeloma, leukemia, and Hodgkin's disease.
In 2023, Da Nang Hospital successfully performed the first autologous stem cell transplantation with the support of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. Up to now, the hospital has routinely performed this technique.
This not only affirms the expertise and skills of the hospital’s medical team but also opens up new hope for patients with severe hematological diseases in Central Viet Nam. Thanks to that, patients can access advanced treatment methods right in their locality without having to travel far.
