Dim sum – a delicious Chinese dish
The unique culinary style of dim sum originated in China many hundreds of years ago.
Dim sum is the common name for bite-sized dishes which are covered by either wheat or glutinous rice flour, and filled with meat, seafood, vegetables or other ingredients. Whether savoury or sweet, dim sum dishes can be cooked in different ways, steamed, fried or baked, and are served either on a small plate or in a steamer basket.
Dim sum can be wrapped into many different shapes, including round, flower buds, birds, fish and porcupines. In order to make the dish more eye-catching, the crust should be thin enough to show off the delicious fillings inside.
Delicious Dim sum at the Dimsum Restaurant |
In Da Nang there are a few restaurants which serve this nutritious dish, including the Dimsum Restaurant at 23 Pasteur in Hai Chau District.
This restaurant offers a wide range of delicious dim sum, including ‘banh bao kim sa’ (salted egg custard steamed buns), ‘ha cao tom tuoi’ (fresh shrimp dumplings), ‘banh bao xa xiu’ (Cha Siu Baau), and ‘ha cao vit quay’ (roasted duck dumplings).
The ‘banh bao kim sa’ in particular has a unique blend of incredible flavours. The dish has a soft yellow crust filled with bright yellow custard which is usually made from eggs, sugar, butter, cornstarch, milk, condensed milk, and custard powder. If the dish is served hot, its filling will often be runny like the yolk of a soft-boiled egg.
Dim sum is highly recommended for those who want a change from stir-fries or grilled dishes.
