Three Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (MSDF) training vessels on a round-the-world voyage arrived in Myanmar on September 30 for a five-day mission, marking it the first ever port call by an MSDF vessel in the country.

The vessels, under the command of Rear Admiral Fumiyuki Kitagawa, were welcomed by Myanmar navy officials at Thilawa port, about 25 kilometres south of Yangon.

Kitagawa told reporters after the welcome ceremony that the visit will help foster cooperation between the two countries in maritime security.

Japan has promoted economic relations with Myanmar since 2011, and is now looking to further expand security cooperation.

After Myanmar, the Japanese fleet will proceed to Cambodia.
