Toyota to begin hybrid electric vehicle production in Indonesia in 2022

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) announced it will start production of hybrid electric vehicle in 2022 with two models of sport utility vehicles (SUV) and multipurpose vehicles (MPV).

At the Indonesia Electric Motor Show (IEMS) 2019 on September 4, TMMIN President Director Warih Andang Tjahjono said the company will use existing production lines that will be modified to accommodate manufacturing of future vehicles.

Priority will be given to the production of SUV and MPV in 2022, he said.

Toyota committed an investment worth 28 trillion IDR (nearly 2 billion USD) during 2019-2023, which includes developing electric vehicles for the Indonesian market. The company also targets export to Australia and South America.

Earlier, Indonesian authority announced its aim to start electric vehicle production in 2022 after receiving investments from large corporations. The Industry Ministry is promoting the development of EV and battery plants to form a supporting industry.

Indonesia targets 20 percent market share for electric cars by 2025. The Government is outlining favourable tax policies for luxury cars, especially vehicles with low carbon dioxide emissions.
