In attempting to develop Da Nang into one of the largest trade centres in the central region, and in the country as a whole, the local authorities have been developing a synchronous and modern infrastructure system.  Thanks to this, the city has seen a boom in the number of trade centres and supermarkets.  Included are Lotte Mart, Parkson, Vincom, Metro Cash and Carry, BigC Mall, Co.opmart and Intimex.  In addition, many traditional markets in urban, rural and mountainous areas have been rebuilt or upgraded.

The city is now home to a total of 72 trade centres and supermarkets, along with 69 markets.

Mrs Nguyen Thi Hien, Deputy Director of the city’s branch of the Co.opmart Supermarket, said that her supermarket began operation in Da Nang in 2010.  She also remarked that the city is attractive to domestic and foreign retailers, and even more investors from both home and abroad will come here in the years ahead.  The main reasons for these positive signs are that the city has seen rapid growth in its socio-economic activities, and there is a growing tendency in the city to go shopping at supermarkets.

In an effort to facilitate local traders to boost their business activities effectively, the city authorities have issued many preferential policies to encourage them to diversify their distribution channels, promote the development of e-commerce market and online sales, and provide modern support services for locals and visitors.

Focus has been on successfully organising annual fairs in the city which have attracted a great deal of attention from domestic and foreign businesses.  Included are the International Vietbuild Exhibition, the International East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) Trade and Tourism Fair, the Spring Fair and the Vietnamese Goods Fair.

Director of the municipal Department of Industry and Trade Phan Van Kha noted “In the future, top priority will be given to demolishing small-scale and spontaneous markets, building a cultural and civilised lifestyle in local markets, and upgrading downgraded traditional markets.  Also, importance will be attracted to developing a wholesale and retail network, building more trade centres and large shopping malls, and establishing more specialised areas selling fashion products.  In addition, more wholesale and retail stores, and mini-supermarkets should be developed in rural areas. Moreover, more small-scale supermarkets should be built in densely-populated areas in urban areas.”

Under the city’s plan for developing trade and service sectors by 2020, focus will be on upgrading the Con Market, Hoa Minh Trade Centre, a cattle and poultry market in Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Phuoc Commune, and a building material market in Lien Chieu District.  In addition, the Hoa Cuong Wholesale Market will be expanded, and an up to 50ha general warehouse will be built at a suitable location linking with key local transport routes.
