Da Nang asks for help from Yokohama to develop solid waste management policies
A webinar to exchange frameworks for joint cooperation in implementing a project for waste sorting at source and Reduce - Reuse- Recycle (3R) in Da Nang took place on Tuesday.
The event was jointly organised by the Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and the Environment, the Japan-based Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the Japanese city of Yokohama.
The webinar was within the framework of the cooperation and experience exchange project on urban waste management between Da Nang and Yokohama until 2024 funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with a capital of VND15.63 billions.
Also at the event, the representative of IGES informed that, in the near future, the project will officially kick off with the implementation of the data management component to create a basis for carrying out pilot projects and helping the city develop new solid waste management policies based on support from Yokohama.
Especially, the method of management and operation of waste transfer stations and policies to implement the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 were also put into discussions.
Representatives of relevant local agencies asked for technical support from Yokohama to pilot implementation steps on solid waste management such as the classification, collection and treatment of organic waste, supporting in terms of means, techniques and experience to set up gathering points, collecting recyclable waste resources AND investing in a waste recycling system.
Yokohama promised to continue to support Da Nang in implementing the contents of cooperation between the two cities in solid waste management, especially supporting the Vietnamese city to mobilise the participation of people, businesses and the private sector in the reduction and treatment of waste.
On this occasion, the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment also awarded the Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee to IGES for its outstanding achievements, contributing to the city's socio-economic development in 2021.
