With only about 1 month left until the Lunar New Year of the Snake 2025, gardeners across Da Nang are busy taking care of flowers and ornamental plants to serve the Tet needs of local residents.

Gardeners in Hoa Son Commune, Hoa Vang District are taking care of chrysanthemums in preparation for the Lunar New Year 2025.
Gardeners in Hoa Son Commune, Hoa Vang District are taking care of chrysanthemums in preparation for the Lunar New Year 2025.

Despite the recent unfavorable weather conditions, gardeners in Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Son Commune are still meticulously taking care of thousands of pots of chrysanthemums, marigolds and roses.

Under the heavy rain, Mr. Le Hoai Phong, residing in Tung Son Village, is still attentively holding bamboo splints to prevent the flower branches from falling due to the rain.

Mr. Phong said “I insert bamboo splints around to guide the flower branches to grow straight, and turn on the lights at night to ensure that the plants grow evenly, reach the desired height and produce buds as planned. In addition, I handle the correct dosage of water and medicine to prevent diseases and help the flowers bloom on time for Tet".

This year, Mr. Phong plants about 300 pots of chrysanthemums and 6,000 pots of marigolds of all kinds.

In An Ngai Tay 1 Village, Mr. Truong Cong Hai is also busy doing all kinds of work, from weeding, to attaching bamboo splints to hundreds of pots of large-sized dahlias.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hai who is Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hoa Son Commune, there are a total of 13 households growing flowers for Tet in the commune with a total of about 9,000 pots of chrysanthemums, and 2,000 pots of celosia, dahlias, and lilies.

“In general, up to now, local gardeners have done a good job with the technical steps. With careful care, hopefully, flower growers will provide the market with the most beautiful pots of flowers, helping them have a good source of income after a long time of care", Mr. Hai added.

Hoa Chau Commune is considered one of the localities with many gardeners and the largest number of flowers of all kinds grown in the city.

Mr. Ly Phuoc Dang, Head of the Duong Son Flower Cooperative based in Hoa Chau Commune expected that buying and selling Tet flowers this year will be the same as previous years, with prices not fluctuating much, while the prices of seedlings, materials and fertilisers have all increased sharply. Therefore, the cooperative’s farmers hoped that market prices will be stable so that flower growers can earn income from the Tet flower crop.

To prepare for the upcoming Tet flower market, Mr. Dang plants about 3,000 pots of flowers of all kinds. Despite the erratic weather, with his many years of experience in growing flowers, he has overcome most of the difficulties.

Notably, this year, the Da Nang Centre for Fishery, Agriculture and Forestry Extension has supported him to plant more than 2,000 pots of raspberry daisy for Tet market.

In Van Duong 1 Village, Hoa Lien Commune, Mr. Ngo Van Nhat has decades of experience in growing Tet chrysanthemums in the locality.

Mr. Nhat said that his family has been growing flowers for a long time. This year, Mr. Nhat's family plants 2,000 pots of crystal chrysanthemums. This is the most beautiful and valuable type of chrysanthemum on the market.

Crystal chrysanthemums have a growing period of up to 6 months. Therefore, since May every year, Mr. Nhat has to incubate seeds, and prepare pots and fertilizers, to plant seedlings and take care of the flowers according to each growth period of the plant.

According to Mr. Nhat, his Tet chrysanthemum garden is growing quite well thanks to favorable weather, promising a bumper crop if the weather is favourable from now until Tet.

The Go Giang Flower Village in Duong Lam 2 Village, Hoa Phong Commune, Hoa Vang District, has 30 households growing flowers on an area of nearly 5 hectares.

Mr. Thi Ly Tho in Hoa Phong Commune, who has been growing flowers for 10 years, said that his family planted nearly 6,000 hanging flower pots of various types for this Tet flower season. Currently, almost all of them have been ordered by traders.

Mr. Tho shared “These types of flowers are also expensive. The Go Giang Flower Village alone creates jobs for more than 100 workers. I mainly grow flowers for Tet, and expect to earn about VND 300 million in profit. Thanks to relatively favourable weather conditions, flowers bloom beautifully and there are few pests and diseases. The agricultural sector and the Farmers' Association support seeds and greenhouses for people. This year, we introduced many new flower varieties and increased the planting area. Many poor households have escaped poverty thanks to growing flowers”.

The whole city has more than 500 households growing flowers for Tet. On average, each hectare of flower growing brings in a profit of about VND 100 million, 5 times higher than growing rice and other crops.
