When does Da Nang airport's T1 domestic terminal expansion project start?
Approved by the competent authorities many years ago, two key projects at Da Nang International Airport, including the expansion of domestic passenger terminal T1 and the construction of a new cargo terminal, have not yet started.

Mr. Phan Kieu Hung, Director of Da Nang International Airport, said that the project to increase the capacity of domestic passenger terminal T1 to 10 million passengers/year has been approved by the Ministry of Transport (according to the Conclusion Notice of the Minister of Transport in Document No. 235/TB-BGTVT dated June 19, 2020 and Document 7256/BGTVT-KHĐT dated July 27, 2020). If the project is delayed, Da Nang International Airport will face the risk of overload, affecting the growth demand of airlines to the city.
Currently, the designed capacity of the domestic passenger terminal T1 is only 8 million passengers/year, and that of the international passenger terminal T2 is 6 million passengers/year.
With the current estimated growth rate of 7-10%/year, Da Nang International Airport will soon reach the overload threshold. In the past, this project was delayed due to problems with land procedures and waiting for approval to adjust the Da Nang International Airport Planning.
According to Mr. Phan Kieu Hung, the T1 terminal expansion project is expected to be implemented over the 2026-2028 period with the total investment capital of VND 5,000 billion which can be adjusted up.
Da Nang International Airport is proposing that the Ministry of Transport consider completing the appraisal procedures and promptly submit to the Prime Minister for approval the adjustment of the Da Nang International Airport Planning to 2030, with a vision to 2045, to have a basis for implementing this project in accordance with regulations.
It is known that Airports Corporation of Viet Nam (ACV) has recorded the development investment capital for the project as VND 5,000 billion. Da Nang International Airport, together with ACV, regularly reports to the State Capital Management Committee at Enterprises and the Ministry of Transport to promptly re-plan Da Nang International Airport and hand over land to implement the project.
Previously, the project to build a cargo terminal was approved by the municipal People's Committee under Decision No. 1643/QD-UBND dated June 20, 2022. Covering an area of over 28,740m2, the project will feature a cargo terminal with a capacity of 100,000 tonnes of cargo/year, and a cargo staging area combined with parking and auxiliary works. The total investment of this project is about VND 350 billion.
After the decision to approve the investment policy of the abovementioned project, Da Nang International Airport has implemented procedures related to basic construction. However, during the design implementation process, the construction unit found that there were some reserve land plots serving the project were not included in the decision to approve the investment policy. To ensure the cargo terminal's capacity of 100,000 tonnes/year after completion of construction and operation, it is necessary to adjust the planning to include the reserve land plots in this project.
Therefore, Da Nang International Airport has coordinated with the municipal Department of Transport and relevant agencies such as the Customs Department and the Central Airport Authority to propose the Ministry of Transport to adjust the 1/500 scale of detailed planning of the Cargo Terminal project.
It is expected that in December 2024, the Ministry of Transport will appraise and adjust the 1/500 scale of detailed planning of this project. On that basis, Da Nang International Airport will complete the pre-feasibility study and continue to implement the next procedural steps.
According to the plan, the approval of the Feasibility Study Report and construction design will be completed in the second quarter of 2025. Meanwhile, the construction will begin and be finished in the third quarter of 2025 and in the third quarter of 2026 respectively.
