Annual festivals in Hoa Minh Ward
Hoa My Village, which appears on a map of Viet Nam dated 1825 (the 5th year of King Minh Mang’s reign), now belongs to Hoa Minh Ward in Lien Chieu District, Da Nang. A festival is held here annually on the 12th day of the 1st lunar month to remind young people of their ancestors, and to recognise their successes and what they should do in the year ahead. During the war years and after, the festival did not take place for a long period, but it was reintroduced in 1994 and has been held every year since.
The Hoa My Village Communal House Festival, which lasts one and a half days, consists of rituals and cultural activities. The rituals consist of ‘le vong’ and ‘le hoi ky’, whilst the cultural activities are traditional folk games.

The games begin with a running race which always attracts the participation of local farmers, youths and students. Young people also take part in flower arranging, whilst older people perform health strengthening exercises and sing “bai choi” (singing while acting as playing cards).
In the 20 years since its revitalisation, the festival has become one of the most eagerly awaited festivals of early spring. More recently, the Trung Nghia, Hoa Phu and Phuoc Ly village communal house festivals have also been revitalised in Hoa Minh Ward, in 1999, 2001, and 2005 respectively. This has helped the ward to set a record in the city in that all the villages in the ward organise festivals every year.
