A type of electric tourist car has been set to be piloted in Quang Nam Province's Hoi An Ancient Town next year.

The provincial People’s Committee has approved a piloting project to use the electricity-powered vehicle for passenger transport at certain routes in the tourist town, which will begin on 1 January next year.

The tourist cars will be provided with their own pick-up and drop-off points and park at local parking lots to ensure traffic safety and order.

Operation hours are expected to be between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm, with each stop at pick-up and drop-off locations lasting a maximum of two minutes.

The Hoi An Public Works JSC, developer of the project, has been tasked with planning a detailed business scheme.

The local administration, in coordination with the Department of Transport, will discuss and determine the specific locations of the stops and install suitable traffic signs along the routes on which the tourist cars will operate.

In 1999, Hoi An Ancient Town was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO for being a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port from the 15^th to 19^th centuries, and for housing buildings with a unique blend of local and foreign influences.

Since then, the culturally rich town has been voted one of the top tourist destinations in the world by several major tourism magazines.

Certain roads in the downtown area are scheduled to become walking streets between 3:00 pm and 10:00 pm on a daily basis, with motorbikes and other motor vehicles banned from the routes.

Visitors can opt to wander around the ancient town on foot or by bicycles. They can also pay a small fee to sit back and enjoy their journeys on the ‘xich lo,’ or pedicabs.
