During a biodiversity survey in the Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) reserve zone in the central province of Thua Thien – Hue, scientists discovered an Annamite striped rabbit.

The scientific name of Annamite striped rabbit is Nesolagus Timminsi. This is a species of rabbit native to the Truong Son mountain range on the Laos-Viet Nam border. The rabbit is striped, with a red rump, and resembles the Sumatran striped rabbit. It only recently became known to Western scientists.

Ancient animal species discovered in Truong Son

According to Dr. Dang Tat The, a member of the survey group, the rabbit species is known for fertility but it is unclear why it is contrary for this species of striped rabbit, which makes this species at risk of extinction.

"The lack of detailed research, not just to this species but also many other rare species is an alarming problem in species conservation today," The said.

Striped rabbit is one of two rare species of striped rabbit, which is endemic in Laos and Viet Nam. This is a surviving ancient species. The discovery of a striped rabbit in Thua Thien - Hue is a big surprise.

The Saola reserve zone is located in the biodiversity corridor of the Truong Son region. This is critical habitat of some endemic species such as saola, big muntjac, Truong Son muntjac, Edwards's pheasant, gray-shanked douc langur and crested argus.
