On Saturday, a total of 306 junior and senior high school pupils and university students from across the central region were given scholarships worth 975 million VND in total.  They are the children of fishermen in Da Nang, and in the provinces of Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue.  The scholarships were funded by the Suntory PepsiCo Viet Nam beverage company.

Junior high school pupils received scholarships of 2.5 million VND each, whilst those from senior high schools received 3 million VND each, and university students were each given 5 million VND.

The granting of these scholarships was part of a programme entitled “Joining Efforts to Protect Viet Nam's Sovereignty in the East Sea” which was initiated by the Tuoi Tre (Youth) Newspaper.  The aim is to encourage local fishermen’s children to overcome their difficulties and study well.  This will help local fishermen to feel secure whilst conducting their fishing activities in the Vietnamese waters, which contributes to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty over its territorial waters.
