Viet Nam research center successfully designs advanced image compression IP core
A research center under the Viet Nam National University-Ho Chi Minh City last week announced that it had successfully developed a JPEG2000 image compression IP core, which is used to create a high-end image processor.

The image compression IP core, designed by the Integrated Circuit Design Research and Education Center (ICDREC), is able to compress images with resolution of up to 16 million pixels and 16-bit grayscale with both lossy and lossless compression modes in the same system.
From this JPEG2000 IP core, the ICDREC team can now design an image processing chip that will be applied in optical and electronics products requiring high resolution and high-resolution grayscale like medical studying, surveying, telecommunications, remote sensing, biometrics, digital movies, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners and surveillance cameras.
It took the ICDREC two years to research, analyze, design and test the product, which is also the subject of state-level scientific research.
The JPEG2000 image compression norm is currently among the world’s most advanced standards, with the ability to improve compression efficiency and advanced image processing capabilities to restore the original image.
JPEG2000 is used in photographic equipment and devices on X-ray machines, satellites, digital cinemas and surveillance cameras.
With the successful design of the JPEG2000 image compression IP core, the Ho Chi Minh City-based center has become the seventh in the world capable of providing this kind of device for the global market, besides existing providers like IntoPix, Barco Silex and Cast, said Ngo Duc Hoang, director of the ICDREC.
"This is an intellectual product, and it highlights the importance of mastering technology and design techniques by the ICDREC and Viet Nam’s integrated circuit industry," Hoang added.
The ICDREC has signed a contract with Bien Hoa Electronics JSC to produce the IP cores for the center and utilize them in closed-circuit television and many other products made by the firm.
The center is also planning to open an office in Japan to promote this IP core, Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper reported.
