Da Nang's efforts to ensure safe return to in-person instruction

Da Nang Department of Education and Training has issued health and safety guidance for schools to support the full return to in-person learning for all students across the city.

Promoting compliance with COVID-19 preventive measures among students

The first and second graders of the Hoa Bac Primary School in Hoa Bac Commune, Hoa Vang District have been the first students in Da Nang to return to in-person learning after COVID-19 closures. Pho Nam, Nam Yen, Nam My, and Gian Bi schools have been arranged for a combined total of 72 first graders and 66 second graders with proper precautions in place. Providing a safe environment for both teachers and pupils is always a top priority for the Hoa Bac Primary School amid COVID-19 as the school is among the first in Da Nang to welcome students back to the classroom.

Ms. Le Thi Thanh Xuan, Vice Principal of the Hoa Bac Primary School said that young students in class 1 and 2 are now studying in different schools in order to ensure social distancing and avoid crowd gathering in schools.

She also remarked that the Hoa Bac Primary School has identified its dual tasks of improving the quality of in-person education and effective controlling the COVID-19 pandemic after resuming face to face classes.

Ms Xuan noted that the school is focus on ensuring compliance with the 5K recommendations of the Ministry of Health in addition to calling on parents of students to have their part in protecting the safety of their children after they return to the classroom.

As for senior high schools, the heed is paid on screening video clips about health and safe protocols in schools, as well as introducing measures to help students take action to protect themselves and others from COVID-19.

Ms. Truong Nguyen Ngoc Vinh, the Vice Principal of Le Quy Don Senior High School for the Gifted said that the school has created 3 video clips which have been screened on the first day of in-person learning for its students in order to help them stay safe at school. In addition, special attention is given to enhancing monitoring and surveillance of boarding students in an attempt to make sure they are practicing preventative measures to keep themselves and others safe.

Ensuring safe school environments

Reopened schools in Da Nang have fully met all the criteria, meeting twelve COVID-19 benchmarks for safe return to campus issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Mr Mai Tan Linh, the Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Education and Training, said that the remaining schools in Da Nang are preparing for the safe return of students on campus on November 1 and November 8.

Thorough cleaning and disinfection will be carried out in schools before resuming physical classes. In addition, temperature measuring devices, face masks, hand sanitizers, and areas dedicated to washing hands with soap and water must be available to students while attending school in-person as part of the city’s safe school reopening strategy.

Moreover, COVID-19 advice and guidance must be provided for teachers and students to support safe return to on-site learning. Social distancing will be maintained in classrooms and other areas around the school. Weekly flag-raising ceremonies will be not organized in schools until further notice.

The municipal Department of Education and Training will set up inspection teams to carry out compliance monitoring in schools in order to make sure that strictest health and safe measures are put in place in schools to ensure safe environment for teachers and students after returning to the classrooms.

The Department of Education and Training is working with the health agency to ensure that more than 36,000 students aged 15 to 17 get their first COVID-19 vaccine dose before returning to physical class.
