"Green Tutor"- effective free class for elementary pupils
Every Sunday morning, the "Green Tutor" class organized by the Youth Union of Le Son Bac Village, Hoa Tien Commune, Hoa Vang District, Da Nang has always opened to welcome pupils coming to study. After more than a month of implementation, the class has helped students review and consolidate knowledge learned online during the COVID-19 pandemic so that they can be more confident when returning to school.

In a small room at the Cultural House of Le Son Bac Village at 7:30 a.m. every Sunday, more than a dozen children sit neatly in separate groups, which are responsible by union members, to learn Math, Vietnamese, and English. During the lesson, the tutors ask interesting questions while reviewing pupils’ knowledge and creating an exciting atmosphere. The children also excitedly raise their hands to express their opinions.
According to Mr Ngo Truong Duong, Secretary of the Youth Union of Le Son Bac Village, for many reasons, online learning due to the influence of COVID-19 sometimes does not guarantee the learning quality, causing difficulties for some elementary school students in acquiring knowledge and returning to school with confidence. Meanwhile, most of their parents are farming and do not have time to tutor their children.
Therefore, the union had come up with the idea and decided to organize a free "Green Tutor" class from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. every Sunday for pupils from grades 2 to 5 students in Le Son Bac Village and neighbouring ones. Parents can register via the Facebook page of the Union or register directly at the class for their children to study.
Most of the union members participating in teaching are students of universities in the city. In each lesson, these tutors help pupils to review their knowledge of Math, Vietnamese and English.
As shared by union member Tran Huu Thuy Tien, a former student of the University of Science and Education, University of Da Nang(UD), who is in charge of teaching English, the students were timid and quiet at first, but they have gradually become much more comfortable and confident. The union has also regularly organized games to integrate knowledge in each lesson, helping them both relax and absorb the lecture more effectively.
According to union member Huynh Thi Thanh Phung, a student at Duy Tan University, who is in charge of teaching Vietnamese, the number of students has been still limited currently as the class is new. However, the union has continually maintained weekly teaching to create habits for pupils and continuously improve the quality of teaching and learning.
As shared by Mr Ngo Truong Duong, after more than 1 month of operation, the class has received attention and positive feedback from pupils and parents. In the coming time, the union will improve teaching and learning methods, in tandem with fostering more skills in communication, presentation, and teamwork for pupils. If the number of students increases, the union will try to mobilise more support sources to equip more learning tools, and projectors to create more vivid teaching and learning, and to help pupils interact and absorb knowledge more effectively.
Recently, the Youth Union of Le Son Bac Village, Hoa Tien Commune, Hoa Vang District has opened a free Informatics class every Sunday night for pupils, students and union members in the commune. The class helps them review knowledge and practice skills in using basic Informatics software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, contributing to promoting the application of information technology in youth union activities.
