The Da Nang People’s Council has approved a resolution to waive tuition fees for pupils in both public and non-public schools from early childhood to primary and secondary education levels for the 2022-2023 academic year. Both parents and schools show their joy and excitement about the city’s humanitarian policy.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi My Hien whose child will be a 9th grader of the Thanh Khe District-based Huynh Thuc Khang Junior High School, said that this was good news in a time of price storms as the prices of everything are going up. Tuition is also a significant amount for low-income families.

“A tuition waiver can help me save a little more to take care of my children's other tuition fees” happily said Mrs. Hien.

Similarly, Doan Vu Thuy Hien, a grade 10 pupil of the Pham Phu Thu Senior High School in Hoa Vang District, said that her family was in Hoa Bac Commune, Hoa Vang District, and both of my parents are farmers. Her older brother is currently a third-year student, whilst she has just passed the senior high school entrance exam for the 2022 - 2023 school year. According to Hien, with families in the centre of the city, several hundred thousand of the annual tuition fees is not much, but it is not a small amount of money for rural families.

The Principal of the Hoa Vang District-based Do Thuc Tinh Junior High School, Mr. Cap Phi Ha, highlighted that this was a very meaningful policy for pupils in rural areas, contributing to alleviating difficulties for their parents, especially disadvantaged families.

In addition, the city’s policy on providing free textbooks for pupils living near the local poverty threshold is also noteworthy.

Sharing the same opinion, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Khanh, the owner cum the Headmistress of the Khanh An Kindergarten in Cam Le District said, this was the city's humane policy. During the last school year, due to the impact of COVID-19, the city also waived tuition fees for pupils.

According to a resolution recently adopted by the Da Nang People's Council, preschoolers, along with primary and secondary school pupils, of public schools will enjoy tuition waiver for 9 months of the 2022-2023 school year. Meanwhile, preschoolers, along with primary and secondary school pupils, of non-public schools will be supported with 100% of their tuition fees at the rate of public tuition fees regulated by the municipal People’s Council.

The tuition waiver is not applicable to preschoolers, and primary and secondary school pupils, of foreign-invested education institutions.

Also, the municipal People’s Council has also approved a resolution to provide a financial support, worth nearly VND 4.7 billion in total, for buying textbooks for 8,438 pupils who are children of poor families and are orphaned by COVID-19, and 4,400 pupils who are children of families living near the city’s poverty threshold, studying in public and non-public schools, and continuing education centres, citywide.
