The Nam Duong Ward authorities in Da Nang’s Hai Chau District, on Monday, held a ceremony at the Phuoc Ninh Martyrs’ Cemetery to honour fallen heroes during the resistance war against the French colonialists.

Municipal People’s Committee Vice Chairwoman Ngo Thi Kim Yen made her attendance at the ceremony and offered incense to pay tribute to martyrs at the site.

In the solemn atmosphere of the ceremony, delegates respectfully offered incense, offerings and flowers to martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the struggle against the French-Spanish coalition forces invading the city.

Built in 1876, the Phuoc Ninh Martyrs’ Cemetery is now house to 1,500 graves of soldiers and residents who sacrificed their lives in the early days against the French (1858-1860).

In particular, in the cemetery, there is also a valuable blue-black sandstone stele and the graves of two generals Nguyen Viet Thu and Nguyen Thuong Chat. Through the process of urban embellishment, these graves have been moved to the Hoa Vang Martyrs’ Cemetery and Son Ga Cemetery, both in Hoa Khuong Commune, Hoa Vang District.

The Phuoc Ninh Martyrs’ Cemetery was recognised as a national-level historical relic site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 1988.

Currently, the municipal government is seeking recognition by the Ministry for the relic site as a national treasure.

In 2021, Da Nang government provided more than VND6 billion in funding for renoating and expanding the Phuoc Ninh relic site.

From 2022, August 15 will be selected as the day to sacrifice the souls of the heroes and martyrs, building a traditional beauty to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in the early days of the anti-French resistance war.
