New tropical depression entering East Sea
While destructive typhoon Haiyan has weakened and moved into China, a new tropical depression has formed to the south-east of the Philippines. The depression is predicted to strengthen into a storm, and it will cross the Philippines and enter the East Sea early tomorrow.
In the next 24 hours, the storm is expected to move in a westerly or north-westerly direction at a speed of about 30kph.
By 7pm today, it should be positioned on the western side of the Philippines' Mindanao Island, and it is predicted to carry wind speeds of between 62 and 74kph near its centre.
According to the National Committee for Search and Rescue, 14 people were killed and another 81 were injured as they made preparations for the recent arrival of typhoon Haiyan.
The typhoon sank a fishing boat and damaged 4 others in Phu Yen and Hai Phong provinces.
In hardest-hit Quang Ninh Province, which had been right in the centre of the typhoon, it was reported that around 1,000 houses had been damaged, and a 52m-high broadcast antenna belonging to the Uong Bi City Radio and Television Station was destroyed. The typhoon caused an estimated 100 billion VND of damage in this province alone.
