Severe flood warnings for Vu Gia River

Viet Nam’s National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting has issued flood warnings for the parts from Nghe An to Binh Dinh, including Da Nang, from October 22 to October 26.

The water level on the Vu Gia River in Quang Nam Province will likely to reach at alarm level 2 and level 3 or above while that on the Thu Bon River in the same province may reach at alert level 1 and level 2 or above.

Forecasters have also issued warnings of flash floods and landslides for mountainous areas, and localized flooding alerts are in place in low-lying and riverside areas along with urban areas.

The Quang Nam Steering Committee for Disaster Response and Search and Rescue has asked the owners of hydropower plants in the Vu Gia River basin to operate alternately their reservoirs for 12 hours a day from10:00pm on October 21 in a bid to reduce the water level at the lowest possible level to enable their reservoirs to receive floodwaters from the river downstream in the coming days as much as they can.

From 10:00 pm on October 21 to 10:00 am on October 22, discharges from reservoirs of Dak Mi 4 and A Vuong hydropower plants into downstream of the Vu Gia River were 900-1,000 m3/s higher than the total amount of water moving into them while that from reservoirs of Song Bung 2 and Song Bung 4 hydropower plants was equal to the amount of water flowing into these lakes.

From 10:00 am on October 22 to 10:00 pm on the same day, discharges from reservoirs of Song Bung 2, Song Bung 4 and Dak Mi 4 hydropower plants into downstream of the Vu Gia River will be 700-800 m3/s higher than the total amount of water moving into them while that from reservoirs of A Vuong hydropower plant will be equal to the amount of water flowing into the lake.

From 10:00 am on October 23 to 10:00 pm. on the same day, discharges from reservoirs of Song Bung 2, Song Bung 4, and A Vuong hydropower plants into downstream of the Vu Gia River will be 800-950 m3/s higher than the total amount of water moving into them while that from the Dak Mi 4 hydropower plant will be equal to the amount of water flowing into the lake.
