The weather changes abnormally, so it is inevitable that there will be incidents related to the wastewater collection and treatment in Da Nang.

Great efforts to overcome consequences of natural disasters

In the morning of May 10, the Da Nang Urban Environment JSC mobilized its workers and surf rake beach cleaners to collect a variety of trash washed away to local beaches due to a heavy rain in the previous night.

Also, the Da Nang Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment Company mobilised excavators to fill the creek with rainwater flowing to My Khe and My An beaches.

As witnessing motorised vehicles and sanitation workers to quickly overcome the consequences of heavy rain on the My Khe Beach, Mr. Tran Thanh Tung, a tourist from Ha Noi, identified that Da Nang was really a modern and civilised city, and very respectful of visitors. The beach was quickly cleaned so that visitors can enjoy the beauty of the sea in the morning.

As part of the city’s Sustainable Development Project developed by the Da Nang Management Board of Priority Infrastructure Investment Projects, the installation of wastewater collection pipelines, and the construction of wastewater pumping stations, in My An and My Khe areas in Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son districts have been already completed but have yet to be handed over to the Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment Company.

In addition, the implementation of the water environment improvement project to the east of Son Tra District, and the Son Tra Wastewater Treatment Plant project, has not been completed.

Therefore, there are still certain limitations and shortcomings in the operation of wastewater collection and treatment systems, as well as in ensuring environmental sanitation at beaches.

Meanwhile, the construction of the Son Tra Wastewater Treatment Plant at the second stage has been completed but the plant is still waiting for wastewater to be pumped back for treatment.

Currently, the Da Nang Management Board of Priority Infrastructure Investment Projects is actively carrying out procedures to hand over the wastewater collection pipelines, 1 and 2 level network transmission pipelines, and wastewater pumping stations in My An - My Khe area for the Da Nang Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment Company to operate.

The unit has already fixed the problem that occurred at the SP4 pumping station at the Vo Nguyen Giap - My Da Dong T-junction in My An Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District.

Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment Vo Nguyen Chuong has also directed the Natural Resources and Environment Monitoring Centre to strengthen the inspection and supervision of the wastewater collection systems in the coastal areas of Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son districts in order to ensure the operation of such systems, especially the SP4 sewage pumping station, to ensure a clean and beautiful environment for tourism.

Treating wastewater discharged at Dao Xanh (Green Island) anti-flood pumping station

In the past, the Da Nang Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment Company dealt with environmental pollution caused by wastewater discharged from the rainwater outlet of the Dao Xanh (Green Island) anti-flood pumping station, near the foot of the Tran Thi Ly Bridge in Hai Chau District.

In particular, the company built four one-meter temporary water dams by sandbags at the rainwater outlet of the Dao Xanh anti-flood pumping station, and installed two submersible aerators there.

Additionally, the focus was on supplementing biological products, and providing micro-organisms periodically to support preliminary wastewater treatment progress.

Moreover, a pressure misting system was installed in order to treat odours.

Wastewater flowing into the Han River after preliminary treatment has reduced in odor and water color.

The company also took water samples to evaluate the quality of wastewater before and after treatment, showing that the concentrations of COD, DO, pH, TSS, etc. in the wastewater after being pre-treated all meeting the national standards on surface water quality, and the concentration of NH4, PO4 all exceededing the standard.

From the beginning of March 2022, the company has reinforced and raised the temporary dam by 0.4m, increased aeration time, added probiotics at difficult aeration locations to provide more microorganisms, and speeded up the continuous operation of the automatic misting system to handle odours.

Director of the city’s Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment Company Ha Van Thanh remarked his company has proposed the municipal Department of Construction to request relevant units to speed up the construction progress and installation of wastewater collection pipelines along a section of September 2 Street between its intersection with Phan Thanh Tai and Thang Long in a bid to collect and treat synchronously wastewater.
