UK charity organisation launches douc langur conservation project in Da Nang
The Da Nang Union of Science and Technology Associations announced on Tuesday that the municipal government had given a green light to implement a project on conservating two endangered primate species in Viet Nam during the post-COVID-19, including brown-shanked douc langurs on the city’s Son Tra Peninsula.
The nearly VND 943.5 million project is funded by the Synchronicity Earth, a UK-registered charity focusing on global environmental conservation. It will be carried out by the Da Nang-based GreenViet Biodiversity Conservation Centre (GreenViet) from July 2022 - December 2023.
Under the project, GreenViet will continue providing knowledge relating to conservation of brown-shanked douc langurs and biodiversity on the Son Tra peninsula for pupils, students, visitors and the community at its Nature Education Centre. Also, the organisation will focus on raising funds from businesses and communities to maintain the operation of the Nature Education Centre in 2022 and 2023.
Besides, GreenViet will facilitate teachers in Da Nang to access abundant sources of documents, images, videos and technical reports about nature conservation from its online nature library in order to improve the quality of their lectures.
As part of the project, some photo and video contests highlighting the beauty and conservation activities of the Son Tra Nature Reserve and brown-shanked douc langurs will be organised in the city.
Notably, a national workshop will be held in Da Nang with the aim of supporting 50 scientists, conservationists and government agencies to review and assess the conservation status of about 300 mammal species listed as endangered in the Viet Nam Red Book.
