Cold, wet winter predicted for the country
Weather forecast for Viet Nam in December from Viet Nam’s National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) issued on Thursday indicated that monthly rainfall trend in the Northern region and North Central Coast is expected to be approximately equal to the average amount which fell in the corresponding parallel period of previous years, and even increase by 20-50mm in some places.
Meanwhile, total rainfall this month for remaining parts of the country is predicted to increase by 40-80mm compared to the same period previous years. In particular, the average December precipitation total for the Mid-Central region and South Central Coast are expected to increase by 70-150mm, even 200mm at isolated locations.
Potential named storms or tropical depressions could develop in the East Sea in December, meteorologists at NCHMF said.
The frequency and intensity of cold fronts could increase over the Northern region. Coldest temperatures are forecast for early and late December. The national average temperature is expected to be approximately equal to level recorded in the corresponding parallel period of previous years.
The national weather service predicts that cold and wet conditions will prevail over this year’s winter across the country due to the influence of continental air masses from the east. Previously, the national average temperature had been lower than the level recorded in previous years because of the La Nina phenomenon. However, in recent years, average winter temperatures for the country have been close to or higher than those in previous years. The national average winter temperatures this year are expected to be approximately equal to the level recorded in previous years. In addition, global warming will bring milder winter weather to the country in the future. However, the country will experince many winters with unusual cold weather phenomenon, including unusual cold spells and unusual snowfall.
