Over 1,300 Da Nang youths join army today

On Wednesday morning, a combined total of 1,308 young men across Da Nang said goodbye to their family members and friends to join the compulsory military and police services for required terms.

See-off ceremonies for recruits were held across districts in a joyful and cozy ambiance, with the attendance of their family members, beloved ones and representatives from Da Nang authorities.

According to the Da Nang Military Command, the above-mentioned recruits are 18-27 years old, of whom 654 graduated from senior high school (accounting for 64.6%); 161 with intermediate, college and university degrees (accounting for 15.9%); one Party member and 5 officials and employees at State -run agencies.

Compulsory enlistment has existed in Viet Nam since 1975 and thousands of young people join the army every spring.

Under the Vietnamese military service rules, all Vietnamese male citizens aged between 18 and 25 are eligible for the 2-year military service programme if they meet country’s physical and mental health standards.

Those in such age range but are studying at universities and colleges nationwide will have to fulfill their their obligations until 27. In addition, Vietnamese female citizens might register for this military service programme in the spirit of volunteering.
