Da Nang's young people provide assistance to residents during and after days of heavy rain-triggered floods

In the face of floods caused by persistent torrential rains in Da Nang over recent days, the municipal Youth Union has established 56 volunteering teams to join efforts with authorities at local level to help affected households through caring and cleanup assistance.

In recent days, stallholders have faced many difficulties while doing business at the Thanh Vinh traditional market located in Hoa Khanh Bac Ward, Lien Chieu District as heavy rains caused a large amount of the wet mud slide onto this place. The wet mud has crept into every corner of the market, causing a mess in this place and forcing many traders to temporarily stop trading for clean-ups .

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Thang, the Secretary of the Youth Union organization of Hoa Khanh Bac Ward, said that the Ward’s Youth Union organization has deployed its members to help stallholders to clean the market. Traders resumed business in this market on Monday morning after the mud cleaning work had been basically completed. The ward’s volunteering team will maintain its operations in the coming time in an effort to support local authorities and people during and after extreme weather events.

Besides, many people, including children, and college students, have been evacuated from deeply flooded areas in Hoa Khanh Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District to safer places by local police force, youth union members, and young people. Deeply flooded areas included ​​Me Suot Street, some alleys located on Pham Nhu Xuong and Hoang Van Thai streets. Rain-triggered floods in the city have caused severe damage to properties of local residents, including those of college students, in these areas.

In the face of flash floods caused by torrential rains in Hoa Phong Commune, Hoa Vang District in recent days, 30 local youth union members have been deployed to deeply flooded inter-commune and inter-village roads to set up vehicle barriers to stop driving through deep water in order to ensure the safety of road users. Furthermore, they have also joined forces with local relevant units to move residents from flooded or vulnerable areas to safer places.

Since October 15, teams of youth volunteers in the city have joined hands with local relevant units to clean up a soggy mess in some schools after flood waters seeped into these venues in order to help students return to their campuses as soon as possible. They have also helped disadvantaged families and single persons recover from heavy rains by providing practical support to them through house cleaning assistance.

Mr. Van Tung, the Secretary of the Youth Union organization of Cam Le District's Hoa Tho Dong Ward said that the recent persistent torrential rain has caused flooding in the Hoa Cam Traditional Market and alley 38 located on Nguyen Nhan Street. Youth union members, and young people have coordinated with personnel of local authorities during heavy rainfall to help with evacuation of people from their homes in flooded areas, as well as assist them to protect their properties from flooding.

Mr Nguyen Manh Dung, the Secretary of the Municipal Youth Union said that 56 teams of youth volunteers in the city have been active in joining hands with authorities at local level to help residents, and their local areas as a whole, recover from the recent flooding event. Focus has been paid to actively participating in cleanup operations in the city’s sewers and traditional markets, as well as assisting local residents to protect their properties from flooding, and evacuating residents from flooded areas to safer places in addition fixing motorcycles that were stranded by the floods for free. Da Nang’s young people have fostered a spirit of impulse and volunteerism to get involved in such meaningful activities, thereby contributing to helping the city successfully respond to floods triggered by recent heavy rainfall, and promoting its restoration and improvement activity in the aftermath of recent floods.

Motorcycle repair service offered free help for flood victims

On October 16, the SOS team of the Dong A University was present at recent worst-hit flood Me Suot Street in Hoa Khanh Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District to fix motorcycles that were stranded by the floods for free. The SOS 22- members team is divided into 2 groups that work rotating shifts during the daytime, and they will give their service for free through October 20.

Besides, they have also helped with evacuation of students from their rental properties in flooded areas, as well as assisted them protect their properties from flooding.
