Students from various clubs and teams at several senior high schools in Da Nang have created many practical models contributing to the community. Engaging in social activities not only helps students develop essential skills but also fosters a sense of responsibility towards themselves, their families, and society.

This summer, Huynh Le Ngoc Chau, a student in class 12/10 and a member of the Hoa Phuong Do Volunteer Team at the Hoang Hoa Tham Senior High School, participated in the team's volunteer activities. Chau and her teammates regularly visit the SOS Children’s Village in Khue My Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District, to teach literacy to the children twice a week.

According to Chau, starting as a tutor was initially quite daunting as the children were not used to it, so she had to engage in conversation and build rapport before gradually moving into the teaching process.

According to teacher Le Manh Tan, the leader of the Hoa Phuong Do Volunteer Team at the Hoang Hoa Tham Senior High School, following a letter from the SOS Children’s Village leadership regarding academic support for students, the team quickly developed a plan to assist in educational efforts.

Since June 2024, the Hoa Phuong Do Volunteer Team, along with other volunteers, has been teaching primary school pupils at the SOS Children’s Village. A total of 20 pupils and alumni from the Hoang Hoa Tham Senior High School, known for their good academic performance and responsibility, have participated in supporting the education of 24 children from grades one to five. Each volunteer teaches cultural subjects for two sessions per week.

Phase one is expected to last until the end of summer. Subsequently, the SOS Children’s Village in Da Nang and the volunteer team plan to continue with phase two from 15 September.

“Each lesson is a meaningful and emotional time for both the children and the volunteers involved in teaching. This is also a heartfelt activity of the team, as it not only contributes to improving the academic performance of the children at the SOS Children’s Village but also provides volunteers with the opportunity to experience and demonstrate the spirit of youth,” teacher Tan shared.

With a similar goal of reaching out to underprivileged children, since 2018, the Social Work Team of the Le Quy Don Senior High School Youth Union has organised a long-term project called “Volunteer Teaching” for children at Houses 3 and 4 in Son Tra District of the Street Children Support Centre.

Ly Thi Da Thao, a student in class 12C1 and head of the Social Work Team, stated that after its establishment, the team recruited volunteers aged 16 and over from the city to teach children aged 6 to 16.

To date, in addition to the core volunteers from the Le Quy Don Senior High School, several pupils from such schools as Tran Phu, Thai Phien, and APU International School have also joined. Each volunteer teaches one or more subjects to one or two children, with each lesson lasting approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, held at the childcare centre itself. Depending on the learning needs of the children at the centre, volunteers offer tutoring in various subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and English.

Teacher Le Trung Vuong, Secretary of the Youth Union organisation at the Le Quy Don High School, mentioned that pupils volunteering to teach underprivileged children are gathered through the school’s Youth Union activities. These are those with good academic achievements who actively participate in school activities. To ensure the continuation of the “Volunteer Teaching” project, the team organises a wrap-up and recruitment for new volunteers each summer. The selection criteria for volunteers include capability, dedication, and enthusiasm, as volunteers not only help the children learn but also inspire them to be interested in their studies.
