Reducing single-use plastic waste in schools
The Da Nang Union of Science and Technology Associations and the Centre for Adaptive Capacity Building Research (CAB), on Thursday, jointly launched the project on building and implementing a roadmap to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic products in Da Nang schools.
The project is being implemented in 4 schools in Son Tra District, namely the Son Tra Senior High School, the Nguyen Chi Thanh Junior High School, the Quang Trung Primary School, and the Vanh Khuyen Kindergarten.
The project costs nearly VND 570 million in total funded by the Pacific Environment Organisation, and it is carried out from now until the end of March 2025.
Previously, in September 2024, CAB coordinated with schools to assess the current status of waste management at schools and collected some necessary data. In particular, on a normal day, a school releases 144 plastic bottles, 325 plastic cups, and 60 disposable plastic spoons and forks, equivalent to 17kg of plastic waste, into the environment.
Notably, 95.8% of teachers and 91.3% of pupils are willing to participate in the project to reduce the use of disposable plastic items.
The project aims to improve the teaching capacity and practice of reducing single-use plastic use of pupils and teachers at 4 schools by comparing the amount of waste, knowledge, attitudes, practices of single-use reduction, and the situation of plastic waste management at the end of the project implementation period against September 2024.
