Is AI "stealing" or creating jobs?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the way we live and work. In the talk show series "Dialogue with Dr. David Hoang", Hoang Viet Ha (David Hoang), Director of Swinburne Viet Nam, shared groundbreaking insights into AI and its impact on industries, highlighting both challenges and opportunities for the workforce.

Reshaping the labour market
In recent years, AI has achieved remarkable advancements, ranging from basic tools like ChatGPT to more complex systems involving full automation and AI-driven decision-making. Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, can produce creative content from text to images, closely resembling human output. Meanwhile, general AI systems exhibit reasoning, learning, and problem-solving capabilities akin to human cognition, unlocking potential across diverse fields.
These developments have led to "comprehensive automation", optimising production and services with minimal human intervention. AI now manages entirely complex processes, from manufacturing to service delivery, enhancing efficiency and reducing errors. For instance, factories can operate autonomously 24/7 without human interference. Moreover, AI can emulate human decision-making, gradually replacing or augmenting human capabilities in decision-making processes. Even more transformative is the concept of an "AI-governed society", where AI influences all aspects of life, from education and healthcare to transportation and urban management.
Dr. Hoang Viet Ha remarked that AI is reshaping the labour market at an unprecedented pace. Simple, repetitive tasks are easily replaced by robots, while AI serves as an assistant capable of handling and resolving tasks on behalf of humans. He also warned of the risk of "AI stealing jobs" as the collapse of traditional industries becomes a reality for those unable to adapt to new technologies. He emphasised that AI's development might push some individuals into a state of "irrelevance", where those who lack access to or proficiency in technology face significant challenges in securing job opportunities.
Emerging Career Opportunities
However, Dr. Ha also highlighted that AI's growth creates new career opportunities. Those who can leverage and integrate AI into their work can improve efficiency, optimise time, and utilise resources effectively. Additionally, AI's advancement has led to the emergence of various new professions, such as AI researchers, natural language processing specialists, AI architects, machine learning engineers, and big data engineers.
To prepare for the future, Dr. Hoang Viet Ha suggested cultivating "irreplaceable skills" that everyone should develop. First is proficiency in technology and the ability to apply AI tools in daily work. He also emphasised skills that machines cannot yet replicate, such as critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, communication, and lifelong learning.
Recognising AI's significant impact on the labour market, many universities have incorporated AI into their curricula. Swinburne Vietnam is one of the pioneers in this field, offering an internationally standardised AI programme. Students studying AI will receive a bachelor's degree from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, a prestigious institution ranked among the top 1% of universities globally (QS Rankings, 2025).
The programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to engage with modern technologies such as deep learning, natural language processing, and computer vision. Students also can participate in real-world projects and apply their knowledge in simulated scenarios, preparing them to meet business requirements even before graduation. In addition to theoretical learning, students engage in practical activities such as working with experts, visiting enterprises, undertaking real-world projects, and participating in workshops and competitions. These experiences not only help students gain insights into the working environment but also provide a solid foundation to seamlessly integrate into the labour market after graduation.
AI is not just a challenge but also a tremendous opportunity for those who know how to seize it. With AI's rapid development, individuals must acquire the right skills to not only survive but thrive in the digital era.
