Tan took over the post from Halimah Yacob, who resigned on August 7 to run for the presidential election in 2017.
He was previously nominated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and won support from most parliamentarians.
The new parliament speaker had served as Minister for Manpower and Minister for Social and Family Development.
