Amongst the issues was deep public concern over whether the quality of water is adversely affected by gold mining operations in neighbouring Quang Nam Province’s Phuoc Son District.
In reply, Director of the municipal Department of Natural Resources and the Environment To Van Hung assured the public that the city authorities would take stricter control over the quality of water sources exploited by the city-based water supply plants so as to satisfy the public demand for clean tap water.
This agency has also urged the municipal administration to approve the establishment of sanitary protection areas where water is taken for production at water supply plants across the city.
Notably, the Da Nang Water Supply JSC (Dawaco) recently cooperated with relevant agencies of Quang Nam Province to take random water samples at some locations for testing at the city-based Quality Assurance and Testing Centre No 2 (QUATEST 2).
The results showed that the water quality of the Vu Gia and Cau Do rivers is still safe to use in daily life.
In detail, the samples of raw and treated water taken on 25 October from the Da Nang-based Cau Do Water Plant, Dak Mi River in Phuoc Son District, Cai River in Nam Giang District and the upstream of the Vu Gia River in Dai Loc District, all in Quang Nam Province, have the concentration of heavy metals and the level of toxicity are much lower than the warning level stipulated in the national technical regulations issued by the Vietnamese Ministry of Health regarding drinking water quality.

According to Director Hung, there are still many projects, like the 579 Construction and Investment JSC-developed Phu My An new urban area project, which are not eligible for land ownership certificates because they have yet to fulfill their financial obligations to the State or fail to meet the infrastructure requirements set by the national regulations.
Also at the press conference, representatives of functional local bodies affirmed specific information would be widely released in the coming time about solutions to many concerning issues. Included are the handling of construction violations at the Muong Thanh Hotel and Son Tra High-Class Apartment Complex project located in Ngu Hanh Son District’s My An Ward and the detection of foreign violators and environment and traffic-related matters.
Vice Chairman Chinh pledged that the municipal authorities would proactively provide timely and accurate information for the local media on the city’ progress, especially social issues over which locals raise deep concern, thereby helping the media generate the accurate reflection of public opinion.
