Viet Nam advanced to the 2nd place in the medal tally of the ongoing 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia at the end of 23 August, the fourth official competition day.

The spot was earned after Viet Nam won 12 gold medals during the day, twice the expected figure.

The gold medals were in gymnastics, fencing, karate and athletics, bringing its total gold to 28. The country also pocketed a total 20 silver and 23 bronze medals.

The same day, Viet Nam women’s and men’s volleyball teams both secured their win against the host Malaysia and Timor Leste, respectively.

Malaysia remained on top of the tally with 50 gold, 37 silver and 32 bronze medals.

Cambodia was at the bottom of the list with 5 bronze medals, while Timor Leste was yet to seize any medal.

Viet Nam has sent more than 470 athletes to compete at the Games from 19-30 August. They are scheduled to take part in 32 out of 38 sports events, and set to bring home between 49 and 59 gold medals to rank in the top three.
