Since 2013, the Da Nang Department of Transport has installed traffic surveillance cameras at local intersections with traffic lights, especially in the inner-city area.  The installation has aimed to detect and deal with traffic violations.

Administrative punishments have been imposed on traffic violators based on images recorded by the cameras and sent from the city’s Traffic Lights and Public Transport Operating Centre to the  traffic police.

According to the latest statistics released by the Centre, in December 2015 the city saw an increase in the number of traffic violations, based on images recorded by the cameras, against the previous month.

In particular, a total of 1,090 traffic violators were found stopping beyond the white line or encroaching onto other road lanes when they were stopped at a red light, up 3.71% against November 2015.  These violations mainly occurred at the intersections of Nguyen Van Linh and Ham Nghi, Tran Phu and Quang Trung, Trung Nu Vuong and Nguyen Huu Tho, Dien Bien Phu and Ha Huy Tap, Tran Cao Van and Ha Huy Tap, Phan Chau Trinh and Hung Vuong, Hung Vuong and Ngo Gia Tu, Dong Da and Quang Trung, Duy Tan and Trung Nu Vuong, and Tran Phu and Hung Vuong.

During the month, local traffic surveillance cameras recorded a total of 1,159 road users who intentionally ran through red lights, up 3.48% against November.  These violations were mainly found at the intersections of Le Duan and Ong Ich Khiem, Hung Vuong and Phan Chau Trinh, Trung Nu Vuong and Nguyen Huu Tho, Hung Vuong and Ngo Gia Tu, Le Duan and Le Loi, Tran Phu and Le Duan, Hung Vuong and Ong Ich Khiem, and Le Van Hien and Ngu Hanh Son.

In addition, 5 car drivers were found parking in the wrong place, mainly near the intersection of Nguyen Van Linh and Ham Nghi.

Fortunately, no road traffic accidents were recorded at those intersections with traffic surveillance cameras during the month.

In an attempt to reduce the number of traffic violations in the city, the traffic police will increase their patrols and checks at local intersections with traffic lights.  Stricter penalties will be imposed on people who violate traffic regulations at these locations.

A focus will also be on raising public awareness of traffic safety amongst local residents to build a more civilised traffic culture in the city.
