The Hoa Vang District People’s Court in Da Nang has recently sentenced 49-year-old Trinh Kim Hung from Lien Chieu District to 7 years in prison for ‘destroying forest’.  In addition, he has been required to pay 1.371 billion VND compensation for the deforestation he caused.

According to the indictment from the district’s prosecutors, in May 2015 Hung hired a group of 8 people, mainly from outside Da Nang, to illegally destroy 53,000m² of the Cu De riverhead protected forest in sub-region 15 in the district’s Hoa Bac Commune.  The total damage was estimated at over 1.9 billion VND.
