Interventions to reduce road traffic accidents
Many synchronous comprehensive solutions to resolve accident-prone hot spots across Da Nang are being implemented in a strict and prompt manner by relevant agencies with the aim of ensuring the smooth movement of vehicles and traffic safety.

According to the municipal Department of Transport, there are currently about 77,000 registered cars, 888,000 motorcycles, and over 7,200 electric bikes across the city. According to the latest figures released by relevant local agencies, the average annual growth rate of Da Nang’s vehicles is between 8.58 and 10.46%.
In particular, in recent times, cases of heavy traffic congestions and crashes have been reported at many single-lane roundabouts with large radiuses.
In reality, apart from tailbacks which happen unless the traffic on each approach road is equal, most drivers are not comfortable when approaching a roundabout because they have a very difficult time trying to figure out who actually has the right of way.
Still worse, recent years have seen many serious accidents at these roundabouts. Of note, amongst dominant crash types are rear-end crashes, collisions with vulnerable road users, entering-circulating crashes, and single-vehicle collisions with the central island.
In an attempt to address these matters of deep concern, the upgrade is now progressing well on many traffic intersections and single-lane roundabouts with large radiuses across the city in order to ensure the safety of road users, reduce the number of traffic accidents, ease traffic congestion, and match with the city’s traffic network.
Accordingly, focus is on removing the large roundabouts, and creating different lanes for trucks and motorcycles instead.
To date, the upgrade of the existing roundabout at the western end of the Tien Son Bridge, which was once notorious for deadly traffic accidents, has been completed.
Work has carried out on narrowing the central divide along the approach road to the bridge, creating a lane for right-turns exclusively by trucks and container vehicles, and repairing and widening all road surfaces.
Further more, 3-phase traffic lights to control the traffic flows, new lighting systems, reflective warning and painted lines have been created in accordance with the national technical regulations.
Thanks to these improvements, the number of crashes has considerably decreased at this hotspot.
Meanwhile, a traffic improvement project is now under way at the existing roundabout at the intersection of Nguyen Huu Tho, Le Dai Hanh and Trinh Dinh Thao streets in Cam Le District.
The 9.5 billion VND project aims to improve traffic safety for road users, ease traffic congestion during rush hours, and reduce the number of traffic accidents. The work helps to improve the junction’s synchronisation with the city’s existing traffic network.
Once it is put into use in the coming time, the project will facilitate road users to make direct right and left-turns or go straight ahead.
Also, 3-phase traffic lights will be installed to control the traffic flows, and all the necessary traffic signs and painted lines will be in accordance with the national regulations.
Mr Nguyen Dang Huy, the Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Transport, revealed that the traffic improvement projects at a total of 43 accident-prone areas have been to date completed since the start of this year, and similar work is expected to start on another 22 by late this year.
Traffic infrastructure improvement activities are on track, including the upgrade of the Nam O and Cam Le bridges, and the streets of Nguyen Van Linh, Le Thanh Nghi, Bach Dang, DT602 and Le Van Hien.
Besides, signs have been installed on a total of 42 local streets which indicate that 4-wheeled vehicles are only allowed to park along them either on odd dates or even dates.
