Nangka forecast to weaken to depression before hitting northern Viet Nam this afternoon, new tropical depression near East Sea

Storm Nangka is forecast to weaken to a tropical depression before making landfall in Thanh Hoa-Nghe An provinces this afternoon, 14 October, Viet Nam’s National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said.

At 8.00 am today, 14 October, the centre of Nangka was located at latitude 19°6’N and longitude 107°3'E, right on the coastal line of Thai Binh - Nghe An provinces, packing sustained wind speeds of level 8, with a gust of level 10 near its centre.

Nangka continued to move toward the west with maximum sustained winds of 20 kph and it will be likely to weaken into a depression before lashing Thanh Hoa - Nghe An provinces this afternoon.

At 7.00pm on 14 October, the depression’s position is predicted to be at latitude 19°7’N and longitude 105°E, right on the mainland of Thanh Hoa-Nghe An provinces.

Under the influence of the tropical depression combined with a cold front, some parts of Northern and Central Viet Nam, including Da Nang, could see heavy rain of up to 250mmm and chilly temperatures into Friday, national weather forecasters have warned.

Meanwhile, there is a new tropical depression developing off the coast of Philippines. Forecasters expect the new depression will enter the East Sea tomorrow, carrying heavy rains and rough seas.

At 7.00 am today, 14 October, the depression’s position was at latitude 12°3’N and longitude 124°2’E, in the central region of the Philippines. The strongest wind speeds near its centre were between 40 and 50kph at level 6 with a gust of level 8.

It is moving toward the west-northwest at a velocity of about 25 kph.

At 7.00 am on 15 October, the depression’s centre is predicted to be at latitude 13°1’N and longitude 119°5’E, about 570 km east-northeast of the Song Tu Tay Island, packing sustained wind speeds of levels 6-7, with a gust of level 9 near its centre.

Over the next 24 hours, the depression will continue moving toward the west-northwest and it is likely to develop into a storm in the coming time.
