River levels slowly receding, heavy rain continues to lash Da Nang

Heavy rainfall caused Vu Gia and Yen rivers to burst their banks but the water is receding slowly. However, some low-lying roads along the river in Hoa Vang and Cam Le districts, Da Nang were still under water on Sunday morning, October 24. In addition, Tuy Loan and Cu De rivers are also receding after cresting.

Viet Nam’s National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting has warned that the unsettled weather is likely to continue in Da Nang into tomorrow, October 25. The total rainfall amount will be 50-100 mm in common in Da Nang, and more than 150mm of rain could fall in some parts of the city.

At 4:00 am on October 24, the upstream of the An Trach Dam on the Yen River hit its peak at 4.74 m but the waters are slowly coming down at only 3 cm per hour. Earlier at 1:00 am on the same day, floodwaters at the Ai Nghia Hydrological Station on the Vu Gia River peaked at 7.68 m, 0.32 m below alert level 2, and the waters are receding very slowly.

Since the early morning of Sunday, reservoirs of A Vuong, Song Bung 2, Song Bung 4, Dak Mi 4 hydropower have switched to operate for flood reduction in the downstream of the Vu Gia River. At 6:00am on Sunday, discharges from these reservoirs into downstream of the Vu Gia River were 920 m3/s.

National forecasters said that at 1:00pm today, October 24, the water level at the Ai Nghia Hydrological Station on the Vu Gia River is expected to drop to 7.4 m, 0.7 m above alert level 1, and will continue to recede slowly.

Forecasters have also warned that the parts from Quang Tri to Da Nang along with the north of Central Highlands could continue to witness moderate to heavy rainfall from Sunday into tomorrow, October 25 with possibility of very heavy rains in some places due to the combined influence of cold air and easterly winds.

The total rainfall amount will be 50-100 mm in common in Quang Tri, Thua Thien- Hue, Kon Tum, Gia Lai and Da Nang while more than 120 mm of rain could fall in in some places.

Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, and Phu Yen will brace for very heavy rain with a common rainfall of 100-200 mm, and even more than 250 mm in some places.

Forecasters have also issued warnings of flash floods and landslides for mountainous areas, and localized flooding alerts are in place in low-lying and riverside areas.
