Solutions for the further restoration of key ecosystems and the conservation of endangered species were put in the spotlight at the 3rd edition of the international workshop on biodiversity conservation and sustainable tourism development in the Central Viet Nam and Central Highlands held in Da Nang on Friday.

The one-day event were jointly organised by the Da Nang Union of Science and Technology Associations, the GreenViet Biodiversity Conservation Centre (GreenViet), and the Environment and Biological Resource Teaching Research Team of the Da Nang University (DN-EBR).

Addressing the workshop, Director of the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment To Van Hung said that conservation of nature resources and biodiversity was one of the four groups of tasks to implement the project 'Building Da Nang into an Environmentally-friendly City' for the 2021 - 2030 period.

He suggested departments, agencies and socio-political organisations encourage employees and local residents to take more effective measures and carry out practical activities to restore ecosystems and conserve endangered and rare species, thereby improving the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation and nature protection towards sustainable development in the city.

More solutions should be taken to control illegal hunting, trading and consumption of wild animals, manage alien species, and promote the establishment and implementation of economic models for sustainable use of natural resources.

In his remarks at the event, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang Union of Science and Technology Associations Nguyen Dinh Phuc suggested that the participants should share lessons and good models, plus proposed suitable policies on the restoration of key biological systems and conservation of endangered species.

Importance should be attached to thoroughly resolving environmental pollution, as well as implementing programmes, projects and tasks to restore the ecosystem such as responding to the government-launched ‘Millions of green trees for a green Viet Nam’ programme, collecting waste along both banks of rivers, streams, ponds and lakes, restoring vegetation on wetlands, and control fisheries in a sustainable manner.

Also at the workshop, a representative of the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment informed the participants about the project 'Building Da Nang into an Environmentally-friendly City' for the 2021 - 2030 period, patrolling and monitoring activities of the brown-shanked douc langurs on the Son Tra Peninsula, changes in coral reef ecosystems in Son Tra Peninsula and Cu Lao Cham Island during the 1998-2019 period, models of coral ecosystem protection and restoration in the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area in Quang Nam Province, and solutions to restore seagrass ecosystems in Central Viet Nam.
