Work on Lien Chieu Port project needs to start soon

The deep-sea Lien Chieu Port is one of the most important projects accelerating the Da Nang’s socio-economic development. Fully aware of the great significance of this large-scale project, at recent meetings with representatives from national government agencies, the city leaders underlined a must-do to start the construction work as soon as possible.

Le Van Trung, the Director of the Department of Transportation said, last year, the total volume of cargo transported through the Da Nang Port during that period hit a total of around 8 million tonnes. This figure is expected to climb to 12 million tonnes by 2020, and about 30 million tonnes by 2030.

Meanwhile, the Tien Sa Port, one of the Da Nang Port’s main terminals, is being flooded by increasing cargo shipments, and since 2020 onwards, it is unable to handle such cargo volumes.

Another matter of deep concern is that a busy route connecting the overloaded Tien Sa Port with inner-city areas is likely to become more overwhelmed with traffic jams, which might adversely affect the city's tourism development strategies.

The delay in the construction of the Lien Chieu Port has also affected the city’s appeals for investment in industrial parks and infrastructure development.

Therefore, it is essential that work should start on the construction of the Lien Chieu Port soonest, as a move to expand the Da Nang Port system, in line with the city’s socio-economic development strategies as well as the national transport sector’s progress, and the growth of the central regional key economic zone.

The deployment of this large-scale project helps Da Nang promote its firm stature as a driving force of growth for the central key economic region.

According to the pre-feasibility study, the Lien Chieu Port covers a total planned area of 220ha, comprising 5 main functional areas, with a total investment capital of 32,861 billion VND.

The construction of the project is expected to be broken down into 3 stages. The first stage is expected to be completed by 2020, with the second finished in 2030 and the third completed by 2050.

Once it is put into use, the Lien Chieu Port will become a major cargo port in the central region and the East-West Economic Corridor No 2, whilst the current Tien Sa Port, which now serves both cargo and cruise ships, will be converted the into a special-use port for cruise ships in the future years with an anticipated capacity of 250,000 tourists by 2030.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has already given the green light to the implementation of the project using the public-private partnership (PPP) format.

Following the instructions from the national government, the Ministry of Transport and the Da Nang People's Committee are both responsible for completing investment procedures for the project. The Ministry of Transport and other national government are required to evaluate the pre-feasibility study report about this mega-port.

General Director of the Da Nang Port JSC Nguyen Huu Sia, said that his company is willing to partly fund the implementation of the first stage of this giant port.

Da Nang’s relevant agencies have made joint efforts in completing procedures relating to the pre-feasibility study of the project as per request from the national government agencies. They also asked for permission from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment to conduct preliminary environmental impact assessment.
