Flower growers start preparations for Tet

There's no denying that fresh flowers will be indispensable for decorations over the forthcoming Tet Festival (5 February 2019). Given that fact, Da Nang’s flower growers have begun growing a wide variety of flowers and ornamental plants in preparation for this special occasion.

The closer to the Tet holiday, the busier for flower farmers because farmers have poured money, time and efforts in their flower farming so that their crops can be in full blossom on time at Tet as planned.

In fact, timely blossoming will made it easy for the flowers to be much sold and enjoyed.
Nguyen Thanh Be from Hai Chau District’s Hoa Cuong Bac Ward has been engaged in growing Tet flowers on a spacious vacant land lot, located on 30 April Street for many years now.

He started the preparatory work for the Tet flower season in the 5th lunar month, with heed paid to purchasing pots and fertilizer, enriching soil condition, and implementing related tasks.

Be said the growing cycle of chrysanthemum usually takes 5 months, with each pot of this kind of flowers priced at nearly 100,000 VND.

A total of 1,500 pots of chrysanthemum for Tet are now thriving well in ample sunlight and rich soil, under Be’s meticulous care. Be is also expecting a bumper crop as many orders will be placed for his flowers at good prices.

In a similar vein, another farmer, Chau Diem from Cam Le District’s Khue Trung Ward, has also made full use of a vacant land area on Le Dai Hanh Street to grow Tet flowers so as to earn a considerable extra income for his family.

Given the climate was on his side, the business landed his family a handsome income at Tet 2018 as his family earned nearly 250 million VND in profit from the sales of flowers.

Earlier at Tet 2017, the household suffered a considerable loss because their flowers bloomed much later than expected.  In reality, there are crops of the same flowers that were cultivated at the same time, but blossomed at different points, leaving growers scratching their heads.

Over recent years, dozens of residents from inner-city areas have rented many vacant land pieces in the suburban districts of Cam Le, Ngu Hanh Son and Hoa Vang to grow flowers for sales while beautifying the landscape at the same time.

Flower growers have installed irrigation and night-time lighting systems on their cultivation areas, along with focused on fertilizer and insecticide spraying.

Such flower growing areas require painstaking care and acute awareness of weather changes, which can make or break their crops, especially prevent pests as well as prepare measures to cope with any unfavourable weather conditions.

Another tough task is to prevent crops from blooming either sooner or later than expected.

Many growers now hope that their flowers would reach full bloom for the upcoming Tet, and be sold out before the Lunar New Year’s Eve.
