In a bid to deal with the overload problem and meet the increasing demand for using services at the wharf, seeking safe shelter from the storm, and boosting the socio-economic development of Da Nang, and the central region as whole, a project to upgrade the whole Tho Quang port is now underway, with the aim of developing it into a driving force fishing port of the Da Nang Major Fishing Centre.
The upgrade of the wharf is expected to develop Da Nang into one of the major fishery hubs in Viet Nam in the future years, with an emphasis on conducting fishing activities in the Hoang Sa fishing grounds, and other national territory waters in the East Sea.
Covering about 4 ha of land and 58 ha of water surface, the existing Tho Quang port now features a storm shelter for fishing vessels, a fishing wharf, and the Tho Quang seafood wholesale market.
Tho Quang is the nearest wharf to the Hoang Sa fishing ground where many offshore fishing boats from localities nationwide usually conduct fishing activities. Nestled inside the Son Tra Mountain, the wharf boasts good infrastructure, and it offers good seafood trading and fishery logistics services. Thanks to these advantages, this place receive a large number of offshore fishing boats, especially high-capacity vessels, from the city and other central coastal localities.
At the Tho Quang site, there are 10 cold ice factories, 26 oil supplying vessels, 10 ship repair and building factories, 4 areas repairing marine equipment, 10 stores for trading metal tools and fishing gear, 14 cold storage warehouses, and other fishery logistics facilties.
However, after over 15 years of operation, the wharf is facing an overload of fishing boats, vehicles and people, resulting in severe pollution of air and water.
To deal with this matter of deep concern, in 2017, the municipal Investment Promotion and Support Board appealed for investment into the upgrade and expansion of the Tho Quang fishing port.
The over 1,000 billion VND project is being implemented under the public-private partnership (PPP) format.
The whole project consists of 7 sub-projects, namely the upgrade of the existing Tho Quang Fishing Wharf at the cost of 350 billion VND, a 200 billion VND sub-project on expanding general fishing port; the expansion of storm shelter at the wharf at the cost of 80 billion VND; the 100 billion VND expansion of the Tho Quang seafood wholesale market to the northern side of the city; the building of an 600 billion VND international fishing port on the northern side of the Man Quang Bridge; and the 400 billion VND refurbishment of the Man Quang Bridge.
In particular, the Tho Quang Fishing Wharf will be 150m long and 9.5m wide, and cover a premise area of 3,696m2, thereby enabling it to receive over 600CV fishing vessels, helping to increase cargo handling capacity, and shorten waiting time.
In addition, ice and production tool storage areas, a medical station, a canteen, warehouses, and food stores will be built.
Da Nang now looks to increase the caught seafood volume to 38,000 tonnes by 2020 and 45,000 tonnes by 2030.
The implementation the upgrade project is part of the city’s plans to bolster the development of the city’s marine economy by 2025, with a vision towards 2030.
Total capital needed for developing sea-based economy is estimated at over 19 trillion VND (813 million US$) for 2017 - 2020, 13 trillion VND (556.3 million US$) for 2021 - 2025, and 17 trillion VND (727.4 million US$) for 2026 - 2030.
