The event had been jointly organised by the Da Nang Association of Agent Orange (AO) Victims (DAVA) and local relevant agencies.
In attendance at the event were municipal People’s Committee Vice Chairman Dang Viet Dung, Vice President cum Director of the Vietnamese Agent Orange (AO)/Dioxin Victims Fund Hoang Chau Son, Director of the Education and Training Department Nguyen Dinh Vinh, and Editor-in-Chief of the DA NANG Newspaper Truong Cong Dinh.
During the evening, a gift worth 700,000 VND in cash and materials was given to each of 20 local AO victims. Of the sum raised, 200 million VND came from the municipal Party Committee, People’s Council, People’s Committee and Fatherland Front Committee.
Addressing the event, Vice Chairman Dung affirmed that the city authorities will always create favourable conditions for DAVA to operate effectively in the city. He took the opportunity to appeal for more donations from generous donors to help local AO victims.
Da Nang now has more than 5,000 AO victims, around 1,400 of whom are disabled children. Many of them are second or third generation victims from AO affected families.
Over recent years, DAVA has made great efforts to appeal for domestic and foreign donors to raise funds to help local AO victims. The donations have gone to provide care for hundreds of the victims at DAVA’s shelters, and to buy gifts for their families.
The mother of a local AO victim, Mrs Cao Thi Bay, said “Being given the opportunity to study at DAVA’s Shelter for local AO victims and disadvantaged children, my daughter has overcome her inferiority complex about her disability, and she now feels much happier. My family has also received great support from DAVA and the local authorities”.
