Woman out of 140 million VND in money scam on facebook
According to the Da Nang police, a woman from Hai Chau District fell victim to a money scam on facebook and she lost 140 million VND.
On 15 October, the woman was surfing the Internet when a Facebook user, named H.H.D.T, sent her a message regarding online money transfer.
The fraudster then send the victim a link associated with step-by-step instructions on how to log in personal information and Internet Banking account to create a new account.
The scammer asked her to send the already-taken screenshot displaying her one-time password (OTP), also known as one-time pin, which a password that is valid for only one login session or transaction, on a computer system or other digital device.
The curious woman followed the above instructions, and only a few minutes later, a total of 140 million VND was withdrawn from her current bank account. Soon, the victim realised that the fraudster had already deactivated his/her own Facebook account, and could no longer be reached.
There have been a number of cases in which criminals duped bank customers into revealing OTP or accessed it by hacking the smartphone.
People, therefore, are being urged to guard themselves against such cases in which scammers use fraudulentphone calls, malicious messages and links to cheat people out of their money.
