Rising water levels on Vu Gia River, very heavy rainfall forecast for Da Nang

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted over Da Nang and Quang Nam Province from midday on Saturday, October 16 into next Monday, October 18, the Mid-Central Region Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting (NCHFM) has warned.

In its latest bulletin, NCHFM said that water levels on the Hoi Khach River, the Ai Nghia Hydrological Station and the An Trach Dam have increased by 2m, 1. 2m and 1m respectively since the evening of  October 15 due to heavy rains and discharges from reservoirs into downstream of Vu Gia River reaching more than 1,000 m3/s.

The midday on Saturday into next Monday, heavy rain is forecast for Hoa Vang, Cam Le, Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son districts in Da Nang, with a common rainfall of 150-350mm, and forecasters warning more than 400mm could fall in some places. Lien Chieu, Thanh Khe and Hai Chau districts will brace for very heavy rain with a common rainfall of 150-300mm, and even more than 350 mm in some places.

A flood warning has been issued for Vu Gia River and other rivers across Da Nang from Saturday into next Tuesday, and the range of flood amplitudes in upstream of Vu Gia River, other rivers and downstream of the rivers will likely to be from 4-6m, 2-3m, and 0.5-1.5m respectively.

Vu Gia River and other ones in Da Nang have also been issued with flood alerts at level 1 to 2.

Forecasters have also issued warnings of flash floods and landslides for mountainous areas, especially in Hoa Bac and Hoa Ninh communes in Hoa Vang District, and flooding alerts are in place in low-lying areas and urban areas.

The Quang Nam Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting says that heavy to very heavy rains will continue to lash the province. A flash flood warning is issued for mountain rivers and streams while communes in Nam Tra My, Bac Tra My, Phuoc Son, Tien Phuoc, Hiep Duc, Tay Giang, Dong Giang, Nam Giang, Nong Son districts, some mountainous communes in Dai Loc District are at risk of landslides.
