The house is nestled on a high mound covering an area of 0.25ha, surrounded by densely populated areas.
Duong Lam Village was formed more than 500 years ago in the late 14th century during the Tran - Le dynasties.
Before August 1945, the village was named ‘Dương Lam’ belonging to Duong Son Commune. It was not until the Bao Dai dynasty (1925-1945) that it changed its name to ‘Dương Lâm’.
After 1975, one-third of the village's area was split into Duong Lam 1 Village, whilst the rest were merged with the old Cu Nhon Village to become Duong Lam 2 Village.
In parallel with the establishment of villages and communes, Duong Lam villagers got actively involved in building communal houses, pagodas, palaces, and temples to worship gods and ancestors who were honored with meritorious services to the country.
The Duong Lam village communal house was built in an unknown year because all relevant papers and documents were lost during the wars.
However, the last repair of the communal house was 137 years ago. According to the village elders, this communal house has a history of more than 200 years.
In 2007, because of rotten and damaged wooden components, the communal house was invested by the State budget to rebuild according to the model of the ancient communal house.
From 2010 to 2011, peripheral works of the communal house were embellished to form a beautiful and majestic architectural-cultural space.
The Duong Lam village communal house was recognised as a municipal-level architectural and artistic relic according to Da Nang People’s Committee-issued Decision No. 9859/2005/QD-UBND dated December 23, 2005.
Compared to other communal houses in the district, the Duong Lam village communal house does not have a clear difference in size between the horizontal and vertical dimensions, but the floor plan is almost a square, about 9m each, excluding the yard. Therefore, at first glance, it looks like the four-pillar house architecture that is very popular in Southern region.
The Duong Lam village communal house is recognised as an architectural work for more than 200 years. This place preserves not only the physical values with traditional Vietnamese architecture such as the roof, columns and wood carving but also intangible cultural values with the annual festival of the villagers.
The Duong Lam village communal house festival is a good opportunity for villagers with many generations to gather in order to remember and pay tribute to ancestors of the country.
