The statue, ‘Jade Buddha for Peace,’ stands 2.54 meters tall, weighs approximately four tonnes, and sits on a solid alabaster throne.
Its impressive size has made it the world’s largest statue so far.
Carved by Thai artisans during eight years, the statue was made from an 18-tonne gemstone-quality jade called ‘Polar Pride’ discovered in northern Canada in 2000.
It was moved to Hong Phuc Pagoda in Kien An District, Hai Phong, on April 6 after being displayed in Quang Binh Province since late March.
The statue is scheduled to tour other Vietnamese localities, namely Ninh Binh, Quang Ninh, Da Nang, Ha Noi, Thai Nguyen, Thanh Hoa, and Ho Chi Minh City.
‘Jade Buddha for Peace’ has been brought to many countries around the world, including Malaysia, Japan, and the U.S. to pray for peace.
It came to Viet Nam for the first time in March 2009 and was showcased at Quan The Am Pagoda in Da Nang.
After its exhibition in Viet Nam this year, the statue will be permanently placed in Australia.
