Surgeons from the Da Nang-based Family General Hospital have successfully removed a rare small bowel from an old patient.

Previously, a 79-year-old female patient identified as N.V.H, residing in Quang Nam Province, had rushed to the Family General Hospital with bowel disorders, epigastric pain and prolonged indigestion.

After performing paraclinical examination, the doctors have discovered that the patient's ileum (last part of the small intestine) has a 10mm-thick and 70mm-long wall and she suffers from a loss of layered structure with damaged lymph nodes.

Doctors have suspected that this was a small bowel lymphoma and advised the patient to admit to the hospital for surgery.

During the laparoscopic surgery, the hospital’s doctors have clearly seen a small bowel tumor 2mm from the ileocecal origin, causing narrowing of the intestinal lumen 70mm long, with mesenteric lymph nodes. Also, meckel's diverticulum was detected.

Because this was a rare clinical case, a team of surgeons have decided to remove the small intestine containing the tumor, re-establish gastrointestinal circulation, and remove the mesenteric lymph nodes and the meckel's diverticulum.

After the surgery has been completed successfully, the woman’s health has been stable and she has been discharged from the hospital.

According to doctors, small bowel tumor is a rare tumor and has no clinical symptoms for a long time. By the time the symptoms are obvious, the tumor has grown so it is very dangerous and can threaten the life of the patient.
